TOPIC
▸ Progress on Piezocatalysis and Piezoelectrocatalysis

Abstract
❝ As a fossil fuel substitute, among the various renewable alternative energy sources, hydrogen fuel is a clean energy source developed in advanced industrial nations worldwide. Although water splitting is a promising method of yielding clean energy from sunlight without contaminating byproducts, sunlight is a desultory source of energy, which limits the amount of solar radiation owing to its dependence on time (day or night), geographical position, and season. This talk will provide how piezocatalysts can be used for hydrogen generation and environmental remediations without light irradiation to solve this issue. Specifically, we developed a novel piezoelectrocatalysis system involving quartz microrods (MRs) abundantly decorated with active edge-sites MoS2 nanosheets to form quartz microrods@few-layered MoS2 hierarchical heterostructure. Through theoretical calculations, quartz MR serves as a parallel-plate capacitor, which is self-powered to provide an internal electric field to the few-layered MoS2 nanosheets surrounding the quartz MR surfaces piezoelectric potential (piezopotential) effectively facilitating redox reactions with the free carrier in MoS2. The self-powered quartz MRs in QMSH present an internal bias to the MoS2 nanosheets, thus yielding a piezoelectrocatalysis system. An efficient piezoelectrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and decomposition of wastewater without light irradiation could achieve simultaneously. This talk will propose a novel self-powered photoelectrochemical microsystem such as quartz@TiO2[1] and quartz@MoS2.[2]
