TOPIC
▸ Analytical and Hybrid Approaches for Analyzing and Controlling the Dynamics of Piecewise-Linear Systems

Abstract
❝ Predicting and harnessing the nonlinear dynamics of complex structures are of crucial importance for a wide range of engineered systems. These systems include complex mechanical and aerospace systems, where intermittent contact and friction significantly impact their performance, as seen in the case of damaged structures, turbomachinery, and vibration mitigation systems. Accurate prediction of these systems’ dynamics requires the appropriate modeling of piecewise-linear (PWL) nonlinearities induced by contact and friction behaviors. This challenge hinders the development of new technologies, as efficient linear analysis techniques are not applicable to these nonlinear systems. In this presentation, I will introduce a novel suite of effective techniques developed by our research group, created to facilitate efficient modeling and control of PWL systems’ dynamics. These methods can efficiently capture transient dynamics, nonlinear normal modes, and amplitude-dependent resonance of PWL systems. Furthermore, I will discuss the applications of these methods in mechanical and aerospace systems.
