▸ Kuroshio Power: Study of Issues in Mooring, Anchoring and Turbines and Corresponding New Design Concepts

❝ The issues in developing a large scale marine current power system in the Kuroshio in mooring, anchoring and turbines will be discussed and new design concepts to resolve these issues will be presented. Specifically, a Cross-stream Active Mooring (CSAM) system was devised to enable serial mooring of multiple turbines by a common tether anchored with a Slope-Enhanced Assembled Gravity Anchor (SEAGA) system to minimize marine engineering costs. A cable driving rotor design was devised for generator turbines to reduce rotor cost. Scale model tests results and progress of development of a small prototype will be presented. ❞

▸ Prof. Che-Chih Tsao

❝ Dr. Tsao received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1995, B.S. degree from the NTHU, and M.S. degree from the National Taiwan University.  He helped the founding of a small R&D company during his graduate school years at MIT and then went on to work in the company as President and Chief Research Engineer, acting as PI in multiple US government funded R&D projects, until he joined the NTHU in 2012. His research focus since includes novel renewable energy systems in wind and ocean, novel 3D printing processes and precision machines and measurement systems. He also designed and developed the mechanical structure of the first space astronomical instrument of Taiwan, a gamma-ray transients monitor, funded by the TASA (Taiwan Space Agency) and to be launched into orbit in 2027. ❞
